'A Rhine Republic? The Early Activities for the Rhine State 1918/19 in Times of Upheaval in Constitutional and International Law' The study deals with the 'early activities for the Rhine State' after World War I and their influence both on the genesis of the Weimar constitution and the right of all peoples to self-determination. This rhenish initiative aimed at the secession from the Prussian Rhine Province and the formation of a 'Rhine Republic' while, at the same time, remaining a member state of the German Reich. On these grounds, the early activities for the Rhenish Republic were - in contrast to the uprising of 1923 - essentially not separatist.

Philipp Bender studierte Rechts- und Politikwissenschaft an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn und an der Université de Strasbourg. 2014 absolvierte er seine erste Juristische Staatsprüfung vor dem Justizprüfungsamt am Oberlandesgericht Köln und schloss sein Schwerpunktbereichsstudium 'Wirtschaft und Wettbewerb' ab. Im März 2019 legte er die zweite Juristische Staatsprüfung vor dem Landesjustizprüfungsamt in Düsseldorf ab. Seit 2010 ist er Mitarbeiter von Professor Dr. Christian Hillgruber am Institut für Kirchenrecht in Bonn. Er gibt Lehrveranstaltungen zum Verfassungsrecht.
